Już od 1930 roku tradycyjnie Burmistrz Nowego Roku Bill de Blasio zapalił 50 tys. lampek na choince w Rockefeller Center. I rozpoczął oczekiwania na święta Bożego Narodzenia. 22–metrowy, ważący 12 ton norweski świerk został udekorowany 50 tys. kolorowych lampek, a także gwiazdę utworzoną z 3 mln kryształów Swarovskiego i 70 "kolców". A na stenie występowali Diana Ross, Tony Bennett i Diana Krall.
